Lyric Video vs Music Video: Which Should You Release First?
Every release has a budget, and every artist faces the same question: put it all into one official music video, or start with a lyric video? Having worked on release campaigns with both independent artists and labels, here's how we'd think about it.
The case for releasing the lyric video first
A lyric video costs a fraction of a music video ($99–$399 vs $2,000–$50,000+), is delivered in days instead of months, and gives your song a searchable YouTube presence from day one. Fans search '[song name] lyrics' constantly — if you don't own that search result, a lyrics channel will, and they'll collect your views.
Releasing the lyric video on day one also feeds the YouTube algorithm early watch-time data while the song is freshest, and gives fans something to share immediately.
What a music video does that a lyric video can't
An official video builds artist identity — your face, your world, your aesthetic. It's a stronger press asset and matters for playlist editors, sync licensing and label conversations. For a flagship single, nothing replaces it. The mistake is thinking it has to come first.
The rollout used by major labels
Watch how big releases actually happen: the lyric video drops on release day, the official video follows 2–6 weeks later as a second wave of promotion. Two videos means two YouTube premieres, two rounds of posts, and twice the chances to catch the algorithm. The lyric video captures the 'lyrics' search traffic; the official video captures the fans the song has already made.
- Release day: single + lyric video (own the search, feed the algorithm).
- Week 2–3: behind-the-scenes / vertical clips from the lyric video.
- Week 4–6: official music video as a second promotional wave.
The bottom line
If you can afford both, release the lyric video first and the music video later — it's what the data supports and what labels do. If you can only afford one, a premium lyric video wins on ROI for most independent releases: it's 10–100x cheaper and captures the search traffic your song generates anyway.
